While I was walking on the beach a few months ago, I happened upon a couple getting married.
There was a bride, in a beautiful gown, and a groom in a suit … and an officiant.
No flowers (not even a bouquet). No decorations. No attendants. No chairs. No guests. No photographer.
Just me, and a few other onlookers, as witnesses.
The ceremony was quick and simple, with just the stunning scenery in the background, and a couple who was obviously in love, pledging their lives to each other.
As I walked away from the scene, I had some unexpected feelings, which I’ll share later in this post.
Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
Beach weddings have become increasingly popular among couples looking to tie the knot … mainly because of the breathtaking views, soothing sounds, and warm breeze that comes with a beach venue.
But when it comes to planning a beach wedding, there are many factors to consider. One of the most important decisions you’ll need to make is whether you want a plain or fancy beach wedding.
Let’s explore the advantages and disadvantages of each option and provide tips for planning the perfect beach wedding.
Factors to Consider
Before deciding whether to have a plain or fancy beach wedding, there are several factors you need to consider.
These include:
Weather
Beach weddings are exposed to the elements, so it’s important to consider the weather when planning your big day. Make sure to have a backup plan in case of bad weather.
Time of Day
The time of day you choose for your beach wedding can impact the overall feel of the event. A morning or afternoon wedding can be more casual, while an evening wedding can be more formal.
Accessibility
Consider the accessibility of your beach wedding venue. Make sure that all of your guests can easily access the ceremony site, including those with mobility issues.
Dress Code
Decide on the dress code for your beach wedding and clearly communicate it to your guests. Keep in mind that comfort is key, so choose light, breathable fabrics that won’t make you and your guests feel too hot.
Budget
Beach weddings can be much cheaper than traditional venues, especially if you choose a public beach where you only need a city permit. DIY options are also available that can save you money.
Decor
Consider the decor you want for your beach wedding. Do you want a simple, rustic look, or something more elaborate and glamorous?
Plain Beach Wedding
A plain beach wedding is a more casual and low-key event. This type of wedding typically has a relaxed dress code and minimal decor.
Advantages of a plain beach wedding include:
- Simplicity: A plain beach wedding is easy to plan and execute.
- Casual atmosphere: A plain beach wedding has a laid-back, carefree vibe that can be very appealing.
- Lower cost: A plain beach wedding can be much cheaper than a fancy one, especially if you opt for a more DIY approach.
Disadvantages of a plain beach wedding include:
- Limited decor: A plain beach wedding may lack the elaborate decor that some couples want for their big day.
- Casual dress code: While a casual dress code can be comfortable, some couples may prefer a more formal affair.
- Less formal atmosphere: A plain beach wedding may lack the formality and structure of a traditional wedding, which may not appeal to some couples or their families.
- Weather concerns: Outdoor weddings always come with the risk of inclement weather, and a plain beach wedding may not have the same level of protection as a more elaborate indoor affair.
- Limited vendor options: Depending on the location, a plain beach wedding may have limited options for vendors such as caterers, photographers, and musicians.
Fancy Beach Wedding
On the other hand, there are also advantages to a fancy beach wedding:
- Elaborate decor: Couples who want a more extravagant affair can indulge in elaborate decor such as flower walls, arches, and lighting installations.
- Formal dress code: A fancy beach wedding provides an opportunity for guests to dress up in formal attire and feel glamorous on the sand.
- Structured atmosphere: A fancy beach wedding can provide the structure and formality of a traditional wedding, while still incorporating the relaxed vibe of a beach setting.
- Vendor options: With a bigger budget, couples can expand their options for vendors and choose the best of the best to make their dream wedding a reality.
Overall, whether a couple chooses a plain or fancy beach wedding, it’s important to prioritize what is most important to them and their partner.
By considering the advantages and disadvantages of each option, couples can make an informed decision that will result in a beautiful and memorable day for all involved.
Ultimately, It's Your Day
Your wedding is YOUR wedding!
There is no right or wrong way to plan the perfect style.
Choosing the type of wedding you want should reflect your own personal style and preferences. If you want a simple, stunning backdrop for your vows, your ceremony will be no less beautiful than an one with an elaborate display, festooned with lovely flowers.
When I walked away from the simplest of ceremonies on the beach, I initially felt a little sad that the couple missed out on some of the trappings of a more flamboyant wedding.
But I also felt joy for this couple, who were obviously excited to be pledging their love.
In the end, whether the wedding itself is simple and plain, or elaborate and dazzling, the ultimate goal of a wedding is to join the lives of a couple together in matrimony.
And you’ll be just as married after simple ceremony as you will after an elaborate one!
Happy Planning!
